Enhancing Highway Vehicle Management with RFID Readers

Using RFID to make highway toll collection smarter

Here comes the question: Why are there always long queues at toll booths?
Every holiday, there are a lot of cars on the highway. Although there is now an ETC (non-stop toll collection system), there are still many problems: such as inaccurate recognition, incompatible equipment, and inability to use across provinces, which makes drivers anxious and toll collectors tired.

Is there a smarter way? The answer is: RFID technology.

What is RFID? How does it help us collect fees?

RFID-based highway management integrates vehicle-mounted RFID tags with roadside RFID readers. Each vehicle carries a passive RFID tag containing unique identification details such as license plate number, vehicle type, and owner account. At toll stations, RFID readers automatically detect and process vehicle information within a range of up to 20 meters, ensuring fast and accurate identification. The system links with automated toll gates, display screens, and cloud-based billing platforms for real-time processing.

Then, there will be an RFID reader on the roadside (such as our palm-sized reader, USB interface, 13.56 MHz frequency, support for MIFARE, NFC and other standard tags), which will automatically read the information in the tag when the car passes by, and the whole process does not require parking or manual operation.

What is the advantage of this toll collection method?

No need to stop, and the speed does not decreaseIn the past, you had to stop to get a card, scan a code, and wait for the barrier. Now, as long as you have an RFID tag on your car, you can pass directly, automatically identify, and automatically open the gate without delaying a second.

Fast data transmission and more accurate identification
The RFID reader we use can identify 200 tags per second, with an accuracy rate of 99.99%. And it is USB powered, and can be used by connecting to a computer or terminal, which is simple and stable.

No need to worry about safety
The communication between the RFID tag and the reader is encrypted, so even if someone intercepts the signal, they can’t understand it, and there is no need to worry about information leakage or wrong deduction of money.

Summary

Although our RFID reader (98 mm long, 70 grams, compatible with Windows, Linux, Mac and Android) looks small and inconspicuous, its application in highway toll collection is very powerful.

In the future, as the technology becomes more and more mature, RFID will make highway toll collection faster, smarter and more convenient. Let drivers no longer be annoyed, traffic no longer be congested, and travel more worry-free.
